Maayan Zadok

Maayan Zadok is a PhD student at the Department of Jewish Studies, specializing in Jewish cultural and religious history of the early modern period.

Maayan Zadok completed her B.A. in General History and Jewish History at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. She continued at Ben-Gurion University for her M.A., writing her thesis on Mar'ot ha-tsovo't, the eraliest known Yiddish adaption of Arabian Nights printed in 1718. Her research examined the work's translation strategies and situated it within the historical and cultural context. As part of the project, she prepared a critical edition and English translation of the text, accompanied by a historical and literary introduction. During her studies, Maayan worked as a research assistant in the JEWTACT project under the supervision of Professor Iris Idelson-Shein, contributing to research on Jewish translation and cultural transfer.

Since May 2026, Maayan has been pursuing her doctoral studies at Goethe University Frankfurt. Her dissertation, supported by the LOEWE Center DynaRel and supervised by Professor Rebekka Voß, investigates the Moravian Church's mission to the Jews in the eighteenth century. Titled Syncretism in Practice? Jewish-Christian Communities in the Context of Herrnhut Brethren's Pietistic Mission to the Jews, the project explores the social interactions between Jewish and Christian actors, processes of religious and cultural exchange, and the formation of hybrid communities within the framework of Protestant missionary networks.
